THIS WEEKEND 22 JULY

22.07.2006

New Zealand 35, South Africa 17 in Wellington (Tri Nations)

New Zealand won by 18 Points. I predicted NZ by 20.

New Zealand struggled to overcome a rejuvenated South African side.

Details

Uruguay 43, Chile 15 in Montevideo (WCQ America Rnd 2, South)

Uruguay won by 28 points. I picked Uruguay by 16.

The winner of this match earns the right to contest a repechage spot in the playoffs to reach France 2007. Even if Uruguay draw they will automatically go through and play either USA or Canada for the right to proceed.

LAST FIVE ENCOUNTERS

11.05.2005 Chile 34-25 in Buenos Aires (South America Champ.)

01.05.2004 Uruguay 20-13 in Santiago (South America Champ.)

26.04.2003 Uruguay 20-13 in Montevideo (South America Champ.)

07.09.2002 Uruguay 34-23 in Montevideo (WCQ America Round 4)

27.07.2002 Chile 10-6 in Santiago (WCQ America Round 4)

Chile and Uruguay have been tussling for second place of pride in South American rugby ever since they first did battle in 1948. Chile won that game 21-3 but the ebb and flow has generally favoured Uruguay. Uruguay has also played in two Rugby World Cup finals. Chile bounced them in Buenos Aires last year.

Chile struggled against Argentina at home but Uruguay put up a stiff fight in the rain in Buenos Aires a few weeks ago. This match is played on Uruguayan home soil so they are favourites. Uruguay is missing some of its top forwards due to a dispute with the Union but Chile has to play away from home a disadvantage.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Uruguay 21st, Chile 24th

Malaysia 36, Thailand 27 in Bangkok (Asia Tournament Tier 4)

Malaysia won by 9 points. I predicted Thailand by 12

In lead-up matches both Malaysia and Thailand brushed India, the third nation in this group, aside. It sets up a winner takes all atmosphere in Bangkok, the winner going to Tier 3 for 2007.

Malaysia and Thailand have a rugby tradition going back to the 1950’s. In 1955 they played their first match for the King’s Cup which has been the pivot of their rivalry ever since. They have played for this cup 23 times with Thailand dominating 15-5 with 3 drawn. It has not been contested since 1999 when Malaysia won 18-14 thus I presume they hold the cup.

 LAST FIVE ENCOUNTERS

16.06.2001 Thailand 29-13 in Bangkok (Asia Plate)

1999 Malaysia 18-14 in Idoh Padang (Quadrangle Tournament & Kings Cup)
